The ISS

The  International Space Station  ( ISS ) is a  space station  (habitable  artificial satellite ) in  low Earth orbit . The  ISS programme  is a joint project between five participating space agencies:  NASA  ( United States ),  Roscosmos  ( Russia ),  JAXA  ( Japan ),  ESA ( Europe ), and  CSA  ( Canada ). The ownership and use of the space station is established by intergovernmental treaties and agreements The ISS serves as a  microgravity  and  space environment  research laboratory in which crew members conduct experiments in  biology ,  human biology ,  physics ,  astronomy ,  meteorology , and  other fields . The station is suited for the testing of spacecraft systems and equipment required for missions to the Moon and Mars. The ISS  maintains an orbit  with an average altitude of 400 kilometres (250 mi) by means of reboost manoeuvres using the engines of the  Zvezda  module or visiting spacecraft. It circles the Earth in roughly 92 minutes and completes 15.5 orbits per day.

Want to see Universe?

Universe , the whole cosmic system of matter and  energy  of which  Earth , and therefore the  human race , is a part. Humanity has traveled a long road since societies imagined Earth, the  Sun , and the  Moon  as the main objects of creation, with the rest of the universe being formed almost as an afterthought. Today it is known that Earth is only a small ball of rock in a  space  of unimaginable vastness and that the birth of the  solar system  was probably only one event among many that occurred against the backdrop of an already mature universe. First Space Station

Image
Salyut 1  ( DOS-1 ) was the first  space station  of any kind, launched into  low Earth orbit  by the  Soviet Union   on April 19, 1971. The  Salyut program  followed this with five more successful launches of seven more stations. The final module of the program,  Zvezda (DOS-8)  became the core of the Russian segment of the  International Space Station  and remains in orbit. ~Salyut 1 as seen from Soyuz 11
